Sim1Lab was created by me, Simone van den Boom. As long as I can remember I wanted to become an inventor. Duckburg’s Gyro Gearloose was my biggest hero. Gyro had the greatest ideas, but his clumsiness always screwed up the whole intension in the end. Although that was the fun of it, the little me thought she could do better…

I often came up with new ideas to improve existing products or thought of new ideas to solve problems. During time at secondary school, when I had to study, I spent most of the time creating new products out of old ones. An empty perfume bottle my father gave me, was sawn into two halves by me, then I coated the inside with felted fabric and after some polishing, it became a case for my sunglasses. Empty make-up cases from my mother were chopped out and lived on as jewelry boxes. Later on, except for the refrigerator, I opened (and yes, I closed it again properly) every electrical device in the house, mostly just to look into it, sometimes to fix it. That probably caused my interest for technique, lightings and robots.

Years later, I learned a lot about concepts and design during my study at the Design Academy Eindhoven (formerly called ‘Academie Industriële Vormgeving Eindhoven’). Because my main interest was basically creating products to higher people’s wellbeing level, improve things and solve problems, I choose the department ‘Man and Wellbeing’. Philips Design Medical Systems hired me for my internship. I passed the internship by offering them a lot of ideas to higher the well being level of radiology patients, while they're being medically tested by Philips scans. Most of those ideas are actually released by Philips under the name ‘Ambient experience’.

In the year 2003 I graduated with two projects. One project; the clinical attraction, is an animation avatar who guides and tries to entertain children through the unpleasant routes of a hospital. The other project; kitchen help becomes healing master, is a series glass herb containers in the shapes of human organs. The packaging communicates to the consumer about where the herbs inside are healing for. Although I get more satisfaction out of creating something which can really help people, I also love to design products and create art, useful, or sometimes just beautiful.
